A big part of the formula is built around plant-derived or bio-based chemistry: coconut- and sugar-derived surfactants like coco-glucoside, glycolipids, glycerin, olive-derived squalane, tara gum, cucumber distillate, jojoba beads and citrus essential oils.
The glycolipids are especially cool. They’re a newer generation of bio-based surfactants made from sugar/lipid structures that cleanse while helping create a more conditioned skin feel — a much sexier story than simply “natural cleanser.”
And instead of plastic exfoliating microbeads, we use hydrogenated jojoba oil beads — little waxy spheres derived from jojoba that physically polish the skin and are a far more environmentally thoughtful exfoliant.
This isn’t just “coconut cleanser = gentle.” It’s a blend of surfactants with different characteristics. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate brings the stronger cleansing and lathering power, while cocamidopropyl betaine, hydroxysultaine, coco-glucoside and glycolipids support it.
That matters: a thoughtfully blended system gives you that satisfying foamy, squeaky-clean-adjacent experience without relying on one surfactant to do everything.
One important distinction: Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is not a sulfate. People often lump the two together because of the name, but chemically, sulfonates and sulfates are different classes.
Some “clean beauty” marketing has made preservatives sound scary for no good reason. In a water-based cleanser, you WANT an effective preservation system — a contaminated “all-natural” cleanser isn’t cleaner.
Phenoxyethanol’s job is boring but extremely important: keep your beautiful water-based formula from becoming a microbial party.
