Myths That Matter - Debunking #fakenews

Myths That Matter - Debunking #fakenews

We’re living in the digital age! We have 24/7 access to information at our fingertips, social feeds that literally go on forever, filled with posts designed to influence our thinking and behavior, and we can find polar opposite opinions on just about every topic under the sun, giving us #trustissues.

Information is valuable and useful, but too much can make it difficult to decide.

That’s why I was inspired to launch this new MELT series: Myths that Matter – because the beauty world is chock-full of misconceptions and sneaky marketing ploys that keep us from making empowered choices in our self care.

Last month, I talked all about skin care oils (and how much I believe in adding the right oils into your ritual!) Check it out HERE if you missed it.

Below, I’m breakin' down a few all-too-common beliefs about spf, dermaplaning and pore size.

Myth 1: We Don't Need Sunscreen on Cloudy Days

TRUTH: Just because the sun’s hiding doesn’t mean it’s not shining plenty of UV rays your way. Think about it: if the sun didn't penetrate the clouds, it would be completely dark outside... In fact, up to 80% of UV rays make their way through, meaning you're still exposed to significant amounts of UV radiation.

Rain or shine, not wearing SPF leads to sun damage, premature cell aging, and (yikes!) skin cancer. We can still soak up some delicious sunshine safely AND get our daily dose of Vitamin D, without any of these risks, by opting for healthy, 100% mineral sunscreens.

My thought: why would I EVER skip this 1 extra step if I can so easily prevent potential damage? It’s a daily non-negotiable, even if I don’t have any plans to be outside. Find my everyday essentials HERE – they’re 100% mineral and I love that they triple as SUN CARE + SKIN CARE + MAKEUP all in one! 💖

Myth 2: Facial Hair Grows Back Darker and Thicker After Dermaplaning?

.

  .

TRUTH: Professional dermaplaning will not make your facial hair grow back darker and thicker — here’s a little bit of science on why: Unlike all of those DIY gimmicky face-shaving tools (please don’t use these!) professional dermaplaning is done with a surgical scalpel to safely exfoliate the entire upper layer of dead, dull skin off.

The bonus is that alllll that face fur comes off with it. Some of us are more fuzzy than others and our "peach” fuzz 🍑 can naturally vary in color from super light blondie to darker black.

No matter what, vellus hair cannot grow back as terminal hair – aka peach fuzz is biologically different from the hair that grows on brows, body, heads, and beards.

Dermaplaning is INCREDIBLE. It speeds up cell-turnover, increases product penetration, and reveals our juiciest, smoothest canvas – we recommend it for EVERYONE as monthly maintenance, especially because it continues to improve skin over time.

What you should know is – once you experience your softest baby face ever, free from crusty cells and fuzz, you WILL notice when that dead skin starts to build back up and the fur starts to grow back. Our bodies naturally regenerate every 4-6 weeks.

So like us, you’ll probably be on the Dermaplane Train fo eva eva to keep your face extra fresh! COME SEE US every month for the magic! :)

Myth 3: Pores Can Be Opened, Closed And Erased

.

TRUTH: Pores don’t have muscles — they can’t open or close. Heat, like from a steamer or steam towels, can help loosen up the ick inside of pores, making it easier to cleanse our skin deeply. But it doesn't "open" pores. Similarly, cold water and skin care products can make our face feel tighter, but they don't "close" pores.

The size of our pores is largely determined by genetics and we can’t erase them or change their size. However, there are lots of easy ways to keep pores clean and minimize their overall appearance.

  1. Keep Pores Clean - Use a gentle cleanser daily, like Oatmylk Creamy Cleanser, to remove dirt, oil and makeup, preventing clogged pores.

  2. Exfoliate Regularly - use a chemical exfoliant like salicylic acid to keep pores clear, reduce dead build up, and eliminate excess oil. Our Lemongrass Cleanser is the perfect gentle, daily exfoliant infused with salicylic, lactic and glycolic acids.

  3. Moisturize Daily - a great moisturizer keeps skin balanced and prevents overproduction of oil. Our Moisture Trio is brilliantly designed to balance oil production and lock in essential moisture to the skin everyday.

  4. Use Non-Comedogenic Products - aka products that do not contain pore-clogging ingredients. The list is long but we make it easy: our entire Foundational Five line is non-comedogenic and safe for acne-prone + oily babes.

  5. Consider Professional Treatments - laser therapy and chemical peels can drastically improve skin texture and pore size. We offer a variety of professional PCA peels and recommend penciling these in during cooler weather months upcoming 🙂.
